Get Out
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I am not normally a horror fan but I had heard such amazing things about this independent film that I was intrigued. I am glad I watched it. I thought it was more a psychological thriller with horror elements.
'Get Out' is about an African American called Chris played so well by the Brit, Daniel Kaluyaa. Chris is visiting his white girlfriend's (Rose) parents for the first time. Like any guy meeting the parents, you're nervous, but Chris is extra cautious as he's a black guy in America (so sadly he's always nervous as racism is still very much previlant).
Chris is there a matter of minutes before he notices very weird and uncomfortable things, mainly that Rose's parents have black servants, a gardener and house-keeper. If Rose's parents say 'they would have voted for Obama a third term' why then have black staff? (It feels like 60's segregated America).
These are the things grappling with Chris and we the audience are questioning these too. This film is fantastic in raising these unusual plot points which keeps you so glued until the climatic end.
There are some amazing scenes, particularly the introduction to the 'sunken place' where Chris gets hypnotised by Rose's mum stirring a tea cup - just to get him to stop smoking, bit extreme much - what are Rose's parents up to? I found myself yelling at the TV lots. Daniel Kaluuya's performance in this scene is outstanding, how he's conveying such strong emotion and bafflement at the same time. He so deserved his 'Rising Star' Bafta recently.
The garden party scene was also a favourite part of mine - where Chris is the token black guy being paraded around meeting all the white guests, again they keep asking odd questions? Chris is getting increasingly uncomfortable and so is the audience.
The thing I wasn't sure about was Chris' friend who worked for The TSA. He often calls him to explain all the 'weird shit' but these scene were meant comedic parts of the film. They didn't gel for me and took me out of the film. I understand they were trying to add some light-heartedness, but I don't think th film need it.
Overall, this film was so unique and had be wondering what was going on throughout, but in a good way. The main leads are brilliant and the final crescendo of the film is so shocking and where the horror comes alive. This is an eeire film with troubling themes film but I loved it.
