Justice League
⭐⭐⭐
I had very low expectations for this film,, but it it surprise me, it was pretty enjoyable in parts. Zack Snyder directed this, he also directed Batman vs. Superman which is an horrendous film, it was so bad, I should have walked out of the cinema.
That doesn't mean I didn't feel dissapointed in some parts. This film has become the superhero cliché, loud, crashy-bangy with lots of CGI explosions, however I was impressed with some of the character development, especially Ben Affleck as Batman, I think he's a really good dark knight and one of the best Bruce Wayne's. He develops the most in this film as he's the conductor of the group. He is also human compared to the other literal superheroes - Affleck is beefed up but still is vulnerable, hence the reason for all the gadgets, tanks and body armour.
Henry Cavill was again rubbish as Superman, he's so wooden as an actor - luckily he's not really in the film much! Lord knows why they CGI'd out his moustache? It looks like a YouTube clip of when a baby is talking, it's so naff and weird looking. The fact that a big studio couldn't do that says alot about the film. But seeing Superman in all his might is great and brings me back to when I watched cartoons on a Saturday morning. Thankfully Lois Lane is barley in this, I can't stand Amy Adams as Clark Kent's fiancé, she's so cringe worthy and meek, (where is Teri Hatcher). Why would a tough, go-getter reporter swoon over a man? It doesn't really make sense to her character.
I really liked Aquaman played by Jason Momoa, it's the complete opposite of the classic camp, blonde superhero who 'talks to fish'. Instead we get a mix between a metal head and surfer. Aquaman has finally become a badass. Hopefully the stand-alone film will deliver.
Victor Stone aka Cyclops, a mix between man and machine, Ray Fisher who played him was very convincing with coming to terms of not being 'human' anymore. It would have been a complete mind-fudge, which he conveys very well to the audience.
Overall, this wasn't too bad, the run time is just 2 hours so I didn't get that horrible itch or frustration when you just want the film to end. I quite liked this film, yes the CGI is awful towards the end and the villan is 'not of this world' trying to get an artifact, we've seen it all before. Yawn.
I would really like to see a stand alone Batman film starring Ben Affleck, I think it would be gritty and mature - they do need to stay away from the cartoon tropes; Gordan turning on the bat signal is so 1990's and Gene Hackman has done a looney Lex Luther, and so much better than Jesse Esinberg!
But seeing a Batman vs Deathstroke would be cool, and we never meet Robin? Chris O'Donnell can't be the only one who played him? I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt needs to don the bird suit.
No mention of the baddie - Steppenwolf - truly horrendous. I also wholeheartedly disagree with your point on character development. Unlinke Marvel where you have genuine buy-in through standalone films building into the ensemble, this just tries to cram everything in, in too short order. No mention either of the clunky dialogue, the shift between comedy and the dark just doesn’t pay (albeit the Flash has some good moments). A film trying to play catch-up with its far superior rival, failing at every attempt.
ReplyDeleteMarvel of course is the superior to DC and yes they did cram a lot in! I think Joss Weadon was able to rescue something good or at least watchable. Because I knew this was going to be bad my expectations were low, I liked it. They improved on Batman vs Superman and that was definitely a 2 star film!
